New Survey Finds Constructability Challenges Impacting 80% of Complex Builds Globally

A recent global survey conducted by ADDA, a global rebar software specialist, has found that nearly 80% of complex builds are impacted by constructability issues. The top three impacts of constructability, also known as buildability, were stretched delivery times, material waste, and cost blowouts. These issues begin at the initial design stage of projects when designs fail to be feasible from a reinforcement perspective. The survey also showed that the impact of constructability issues was higher in North America and Asia Pacific, with Europe, including the UK, having a lower impact.

Despite the industry's recognition of the impact of constructability issues, nearly a quarter of survey respondents reported that it was only sometimes considered during the project. This highlights the need for improved consideration and planning for buildability, as it impacts the effectiveness, productivity, and profitability of a project throughout the value chain.

Furthermore, the survey showed that the industry is highly focused on environmental considerations, with nearly 80% of survey respondents measuring the environmental impacts of a project. This demonstrates a growing trend towards sustainable construction practices and the importance of considering the environmental impacts of a project.

Alan Jeffreys, CTO of ADDA, stated that the survey's results were significant as they identified a clear opportunity for improvement in the industry. "Given the impact that buildability has throughout the value chain of a build, on effectiveness, productivity and profitability, this is a significant finding as it identifies a clear opportunity for improvement." The survey results suggest that there is a need for increased focus on constructability and environmental considerations in the civil construction industry to improve project outcomes and profitability.
